O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
Psalm 139: 1-5, 23-24
You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
.
.
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous ways in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Self-reflection and quiet meditation to hear God’s voice are courageous acts. It requires surrender. It acknowledges that you don’t have the full picture. It allows another to reflect who you are. When we have the right God — one who is kind, compassionate and ever-for-our-good — we learn to trust being seen. And if we are in consistent practice with God, it will overflow to our trust in being seen by humans. Take some time. Sit with the questions. And whatever form responses come is perfect.
- How have you been brave?
- Where has fear dictated how you acted?
- Who are you when you are quiet?
- Who do you want to become?
- What questions do you have for God?
- How do you want God to respond?

3. When I’m quiet, I am big-hearted and brave and funny. I feel young and mature at the same time. I feel like all the things of the world are possible yet I feel connected to the pain at the ground. I can straddle the worlds I get to occupy without any of them overcoming or defining me.
4. I want to be a brave activist. I want to be knowledgeable. I want to be vulnerable and astute like Kiese Laymon and talented like Charles Yu and tough with love like Andrew Cuomo.
5. How do I move to New York City? Do I drive or do I fly? Where should I stay in May? When do I leave? What do I do with my car?
6. Concrete specific answers. A place to stay in May where I can flourish. Someone bringing it up without my asking about New York and living in LA.
